summer cooling

Washington temperatures hit record highs in 2021, topping out at 120 degrees Fahrenheit. With the summers getting hotter, it’s time to consider what you’re going to do to keep cool in this heat.

Extreme heat can cause discomfort and serious health risks. Are you prepared?

We’re here with a few quick summer cooling tips that can keep you comfortable in the upcoming months. Read on to learn more.

1. Cover Windows During the Day

When the weather is hot and sunny, staying inside isn’t enough to escape it. If you have plenty of natural light in your home, you’re turning your rooms into natural ovens! All of that beautiful light is making your home too hot.

If you’re trying not to over-use your air conditioning unit but you’re also tired of coming home to a hot and stuffy house, cover your windows with blinds or curtains during the day. This will block some of the light so your home stays cooler.

If you still want to be able to see outside (common for people who work from home), use reflective window film. You’ll still be able to see, but it will filter some of the light.

2. Cool Off Your Bedding

We’ve all been there: It’s hot at night, even with the AC on, and you’re tossing and turning trying to resist throwing your sheets onto the floor. There’s no longer a cool side of the pillow.

On super hot days, we love putting a sheet and a pillowcase into the freezer to cool off for a few hours before bed. You can spray them with a fine mist of water, but this isn’t a necessary step.

Yes, your linens will warm up, but they may stay cool enough for you to fall asleep.

3. Don’t Use Your Oven

We all love a good casserole every now and again, but a hot summer day isn’t the best time for oven meals or baked goods. Your oven is heating up your kitchen, and if you’re in a small or open-concept home, it can also heat up the rest of your house to some degree.

Swap oven meals for stovetop meals or cold meals on hot days. Better yet, why not fire up the grill and cook outside as the weather cools down in the evenings?

4. Make Sure Your Air Conditioning Is in Working Order

The last thing that you want on a hot day is for your air conditioner to stop working. The hot summer weather is on the horizon, so now is the best time to get your air conditioner checked out.

If you need a new air conditioning unit, talk to a local company about air conditioning installation. If you already have a unit but haven’t gotten maintenance in a while, get a tune-up!
