Heating your home takes up a lot of energy. More than 40 percent of your utility bill goes toward heating.

Yet you may not feel what you are paying for. You know your heater is on, yet your heater is blowing cold air. It’s not doing its job, but it is continuing to use energy and send your bills skyrocketing.

You need to get your home heater problems resolved right away. But don’t call someone just yet.

Figure out why it is your home heater is blowing cold air. Here is a quick guide to some possible reasons.

The Thermostat Isn’t Working

The first thing you should check is your thermostat. A number of settings can cause heater issues.

Instead of warming your house, your heating system could have been set to cool the house. Someone may have set your thermostat to activate at a higher temperature. The thermostat may not be wired properly, causing the heater not to activate at all.

Check the various settings on your device. Make sure the temperature is set to the one you want.

If you need to change the batteries, follow your manufacturers’ instructions. Do not use sharp tools to pry parts of your thermostat off. You could risk damaging the device and disabling your heating system.

If your thermostat fails multiple times, hire someone who can repair it. Consider placing in a high-tech thermostat with precise temperature control.

The Pilot Light Is Extinguished

A pilot light is a small flame that ignites the gas in an old furnace. The light can go out if it is not maintained.

If your thermostat is working, inspect the furnace itself. Clear a path so you can walk to and from the furnace. Then open it up carefully and see the light inside.

If you need to relight your pilot light, be careful. Keep a distance from the gas and flame source. Wear flame-resistant gloves, so you don’t burn yourself.

Find the reset button for your gas valve and hold down on it. If the button doesn’t work, ignite it with a grill lighter. When you get the light to remain lit, turn the valve back on.

The Filter Is Clogged

While you’re at your furnace, take a moment to inspect its filter. It may become clogged, keeping warm air from circulating through it.

Your ducts also contain their own filters. If any one of these filters becomes clogged, warm air can become trapped.

Walk through your system and inspect each one. Keep spare filters on hand and swap them out. Make sure the new filter is the same size as the old one.
